On April 10th, we celebrate National Siblings Day, a day that brings mixed emotions for many people.
Some people LOVE their siblings.
Some people don’t have any siblings.
But me, I’m the dreaded middle child.
The kind that should star in a movie called “Chucky Cheese – The Story of a Crazy Middle Child Who Loved Italian Food.”
Middle children have it rough, they’re torn in a million directions trying to please everyone.
And despite what the therapists will tell you, and I’ve been in the chair across from many of them, competition among siblings is real (by the way, I’ve had a LOT more therapy than my brothers & sisters, so I win).
My younger sister could do no wrong. She was adored by my CEO Dad who doled out love in portions like the pieces of an apple pie chart.
My older brother was super handsome, a great athlete. Everyone loved him.
In fact, he was such a great guy, my name in school was “Nickey’s brother”. Too bad I never lived up to his middle school reputation. As you age, you eventually realize that biology is just one factor in the person you become. Family tends to define us, but it doesn’t have to.
Love your siblings, but don’t let your spot in the family pecking order dictate your life. Create new brothers and sisters of your own as you grow.
